Why Autumn Has Always Been the Best Time to Scatter Seedballs – And Why It’s Now More Important Than Ever!

Autumn is here, and we couldn’t be happier! There’s something truly magical about this time of year: the light turns a gorgeous soft gold, crisp morning air greets us in the garden, and the soil is still holding on to the lovely lingering warmth of summer sunshine..

For years, in the gardeners calendar Spring has stolen the spotlight as the “official” start of the gardening year. We get it – when the sun comes out after a long winter, everyone is eager to head outdoors and get growing! But here at Seedball, we’ve always shouted loudest that Autumn is the absolute best time to scatter wildflower seed balls!

And with the shifting weather patterns we’ve all been experiencing lately, Autumn scattering isn’t just a great shortcut – it is now more important than ever.

If you look at how nature works naturally, Autumn is the season when plants drop their seeds. Wildflowers naturally scatter their seeds in late Summer and Autumn, allowing them to settle onto warm, moist ground before winter sets in. By scattering seed balls now, you are simply working with nature’s natural cycle!

There are some brilliant advantages to autumn scattering:

  • Warm Soil & Rain: The ground is still warm from summer, which encourages strong root development, while Autumn showers do the watering. Less work for you, happier plants in the long run!

  • Natural Cold Stratification: Many of our native wildflowers, such as wild poppies, yellow rattle, and foxgloves, actually need a period of winter cold to break dormancy. This natural freeze-and-thaw cycle tells the seed, “Winter is over, time to wake up!”

  • The Seedball Armour: What about birds, mice, or frost? That’s where our handy seed ball recipe comes in! The protective clay protects the seeds through cold spells and keeps hungry seed predators at bay until the moment is right for sprouting.

  • Beating the Spring Weeds: Seeds scattered in autumn get a massive head start. They germinate and establish roots early, giving them a competitive edge over fast-growing spring weeds.

Climate Change & Drought Resilience

While Autumn scattering has always made sense, recent weather trends have made it a vital strategy for anyone wanting a thriving garden. Hotter, drier Summers mean Spring-sown seedlings are increasingly vulnerable to heatwaves and sudden droughts before their roots have had a chance to dig deep.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recently issued a call for gardeners across the UK to rethink the traditional spring rush and make autumn our primary planting season.

Leigh Hunt, Principal Horticultural Advisor at the RHS, summed it up perfectly:

“Spring may be the season when Britain traditionally gets gardening, but hotter, drier summers mean autumn more than ever also has a crucial role to play,” he said. “Planting then gives trees and perennials time to establish while soils are moist and rainfall is more reliable.”

When you scatter seed balls in Autumn, the reliable Winter moisture allows the seedlings to develop deep, robust root systems long before the heat of summer arrives. When drier months hit, your wildflowers are tough, established, and resilient enough to thrive with far less watering!

How to Scatter This Autumn!

  1. Pick Your Spot: Choose where you want to grow your wildflowers in your garden, hanging baskets, border, or pots.

  2. Clear the Way: Remove any heavy perennial weeds (like nettles or thistles) and rake away leaves if there are too many or scatter on top. (Pro tip: don’t throw those leaves away! Pile them in a quiet corner to give hedgehogs and insects a cosy winter shelter).

  3. Scatter & Relax: Throw down your favourite Seedball mix! Don’t bury or dig.

  4. Let Nature Take over!

You can scatter seed balls right up until the first hard frost hits your area. So why wait for Spring? Give your garden a head start, save water, and get ready for a pollinator-filled paradise come early Summer.
