🐦 Big Garden Birdwatch 🐦 2023
Join in with the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Bird Watch.

Simply count the birds you see in your garden, local park or from your balcony for one hour between the 27-29th January 2023!Β

It’s a great way to help conservation! So why not get the kettle on and settle down at your window to watch the birds in the garden.Β It’s a fun, free activity for all the family; and a great way to see how local wildlife is managing. Wherever you are, whatever you see, it counts! Submit your results online.

Top Tips:
Only include birds that land, not those flying over. Count the highest number of each species you see at any one time, otherwise you could count the same bird twice. For example, if you saw a group of eight starlings, and towards the end of the hour you saw two starlings together, please record eight as your final count.

There’s still time to sign up: Get involved!Β

Here is a list of the top birds you may see in gardens at this time of year. You may be surprised to learn that both the Greenfinch and Starling are on the Red List:

Quick Bird Facts
  • Birds waterproof their feathers by preening with oil from glands near their tails, this helps them to fly short distances in the rain.
  • Birds need to eat at regular intervals, to keep their daily energy levels consistent, and cannot spend the whole day sheltering.
  • Birds will often follow a regular round, visiting areas they can expect to find food, which is why it is important to keep feeders clean and topped up during the winter months.
