Wildflower Seedballs For Schools

As part of the Backyard Nature Seedball giveaway this Autumn, we’re offering schools a bulk bag of wildflower seed balls to help create your school’s own mini meadow. There’s no cost for the balls themselves, but we do charge a £6 postage and packaging cost (see below for details).

Why not plant them on Outdoor Classroom Day on 5 November? Make sure you’re signed up to take part!

We’re offering each school a bag of 250 wildflower seed balls  – which will cover an area of approximately 15 m2. The mix will be a random selection of bee and butterfly friendly wildflowers, see below for more details. To order your Seedball bag, please let us know the name of the School indicated and if you are happy for us to share this with the Outdoor Classroom team.

RHS plants for pollinators, No chemicals, pesticides or neonics, made in the UK, peat free, easy to use gardening seed balls

Availability: In stock

Please confirm that you're happy for us to share your school name and school website with the Outdoor Classroom Team? No other personal data will be shared. This really helps them to track the impact of the campaign :)

The wildflower seeds included will be a random mixture from all of our Seedball wildflower varieties (excluding any toxic species). For how best to use the seed balls, we will provide an information with your delivery and for the most detail see our FAQ page. Essentially all you need is a patch of bare earth, some seed balls and some rain! If you’re looking to scatter onto a grassy area, it’s best to remove the top 10 cm of the soil before scattering as grass is too dominant for the wildflowers to establish.

Autumn is the very best time to scatter wildflower seeds as many species need exposure to a cold winter to help trigger germination in the Spring. Scattering in the Autumn therefore gives the best chance for the plants to come into flower over the following Spring and Summer … and so fits brilliantly into an academic year. The wildflower patch will also likely keep flowering year after year – we often find the displays get stronger over time!

As we have limited stock to give-away, we are unfortunately only able to offer 1 bag per school or group at this time. Please allow 7-10 days for delivery. Bags are offered on a first-come-first-served basis, if we have run out please do email us and we’ll let you know when we have more available.

The £6 price shown is to cover postage and packaging costs – at check-out you won’t be charged any further shipping costs even if you add further items from the website to your basket. We also have a half price sale currently on our 300g and 500g bulk bags if you are keen to top up your seed balls.

Thanks so much ! And please do share any pics of your wildflower patches using the #OutdoorClassroomDay hashtag!! xx

What are Seedballs? How do they work?

What is a Seedball?

A ball made from seeds, clay, peat-free compost and chili powder.

Why use Seedballs?

The ball prevents the seeds from being a tasty lunch for birds and insects, thereby increasing the chances of your flowers growing. Plus they’re super easy to use, no digging and no expert knowledge needed!

What's in the tin?

There are 20 balls in each tin, and around 30 seeds per ball.

How do I use Seedballs?

Throw onto soil or compost in a garden bed or planter in Spring or Autumn, leaving at least 10cm between each ball. Your Seedball has everything it needs to grow and, once the ball becomes moist and the temperature is right, your seeds will germinate!

What area will my Seedballs cover?

We would usually advise 20 seed balls per square metre, or 3-5 seed balls for a 35cm container.

Conservation

All seed is responsibly sourced in the UK from Flora Locale accredited suppliers, we only ever use peat-free compost and our steel tins are manufactured in London (with the help of a solar farm on the factory roof).

See our FAQ page for our full guide to growing wildflowers from Seedball.
